Tungnath at an elevation of 3680 mts above sea - level in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand India. It is one of the most important of the Panch Kedars. It is also the highest of the Panch Kedars.
Tungnath is visited 3rd during the Panch Kedar Yatra. First comes Kedarnath , Madhmaheshwar then Tungnath , Kalpeshwar and Rudranath at the last.
Tungnath is visited by thousands of tourist and pilgrims from all over the world.
The Tungnath Temple The Panch Kedar temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva. The hump is worshipped at Kedarnath, the arms at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the navel at Madhmaheshwar and the head at Kalpeshwar.
The Tungnath temple is a beautiful rock temple. Inside the temple is an embedded dark rock representing the Swayambhu Bhuja or the arm of Lord Shiva.
At the gate of the temple sits Nandi the bull. The idols of Kalbhairav, Vyas , Goddess Parvati stand alongside of the shivaling in the temple.
The Tungnath temple opens every year in the month of ( April - May ) depending upon the climatic conditions and closes gate in the third week of November.
During the winters the idol of the temple is moved to Mukunath and later duly returned on the opening of the temple.
It is believed that Lord Vishu got his sudarshan chakra after a severe penance here in Tungnath.
The daemon king Ravana is said to have performed penance here to please Lord Shiva.
It is said that Lord Shiva had himself explained the greatness of Tungnath to goddess Parvati in the 'Skanda Puran'.The Tungnath Temple was here built by the Pandavas in order to ask his for his forgiveness
Trek to Tungnath is a moderate grade trek which begins at Chopta. The trek usually takes 2 - 3 hrs and is a 4 - 5 kms trek.

Chandrashila Peak The summit is around 2kms above the Tungnath temple and has many legends associated with it. Chandrashila means Pillars of the Moon and is believed that moon god did severe penance here to please Lord Vishnu.

The temple remains closed from November to March The best time to visit Tungnath would be from May - June as heavy snowfall during winters and landslides during rains can disrupt your journey.
