Uttarkashi district is situated in the Uttarakhand State of India. The beautiful hilly town Uttarkashi ( headquarters )is situated on right bank of the river Bhagirathi at an altitude of 1160 mts above sea - level.

Uttarkashi has a lot of religious importance. It was once known as Shivnagri during the puranic age and is also referred as the Kashi of the North It is home to two most important char dham yatra centre , the Gangotri and the Yamunotri.

Uttarkashi has wide and varied topography from the plains of the town at 1160 mts altitude to Tapovan at around 4330 mts above sea level. Around 90% of the region is hilly and covered with huge mountains and lusty green forest of Pine and Oak.

    Uttarkashi is one of the most beautiful districts of Uttarakhand. There are numerous small and big temples in here. The Shakti Temple and the Vishwanath temple are some of the well known temples located in the town while the other temples found in Uttarkashi are The Gangotri Temple, Yamunotri Temple, Shani Temple, Annapurna, Ekadashrudra Dattatrya and goddess Kali, Ekadash Rudra, Bhairav Temple.

    This mountain town covered with dense woody forests and challenging undulate terrains is also the base camp for adventurous trek tour to Gomukh and Tapovan and is a good location for sports like skiing in Dayara Bugyal and paragliding.

    Uttarkashi is flocked with tourist and pilgrims all the year around and has also emerged as an important centre for adventurous sports.

    Shakti Temple

    Shakti Temple

    Shakti Temple is located in the town 200 ft from the bus stand. It is one of the well known temples in Uttarkashi. The temple is dedicated to goddess Durga or goddess of strength. The temple has a huge trishul ( trident ) made of ( Asth Dhatu ) 8 metals ( Iron, Copper, Brass, Gold, Silver, Zinc, Lead and mercury ). The trident is 26 feet high, and the trident's base measures 8 feet 9 inches, and its top, 18 inches in circumference. It also has inscription describing the Vishwanath temple.

    The Kashi Vishwanath Temple  is located in the same compound and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was build by built by King Ganeshwar. In front of the temple is another smaller trident believed to be used by Lord Shiva to destroy Vakasur. It is also believed that this will be the home of Lord Shiva during the Satyug period and also the idol of from now Kashi will be transferred here.

    Maneri Dam is located around 12kms from the town on the way to Gangotri on the river Bhagirathi. The water from the dam is reached to the turbines situated 12kms far in Trilot by underground tunnels. The lake built enhances the beauty of Maneri.

    It is a good picnic spot and the surroundings are very scenic.

    Dayara Bugyal ( 28kms + 3kms trek ) is the name of a flat high altitude meadow. The view from the meadow is fantastic. One has to take an 8kms trek from Barsu village to reach the Bugyal.

    Nachiketa Tal ( 29kms + 3kms trek ) This small beautiful lake is situated near Chaurangi khal surrounded by lofty dense Deodar, Oak and Rhododendron forest. We have to trek 3kms to reach the lake. The view around the lake is very scenic and beautiful.

    Hanuman Chatti  is 13kms from Yamunotri. The trek to Dodital also begins from here.

    Dodital ( 32kms )  This lake is situated amidst lofty green Pine, Oak and Deodar forest. It is a beautiful lake full of fishes. Anglers delight in absolute paradise. Good for camping. Trek starts from Kaldyani village.

    Gangnani

    Gangnani  26 kms from Uttarkashi on the way to Gangotri lies this shrine dedicated to Sage Parashar. There is a hot water spring on the left bank of the Bhagirathi river. These are hot sulphur springs just halfway to Gangotri. Find time to have a break from the long drive and take a refreshing hot water bath here. It clearly removes all your tiredness of the trip.

    Geography, Culture and People

    Uttarkashi town is the headquarters of Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand. The district also shares its international boundary with Tibet. Uttarkashi is surrounded by huge mountains peaks of Kedarnath Group, Gangotri Group, Jogin Group, Swargarohini Group, Manda, Meru, Sumeru and others. It is also home to the most important rivers of India The Ganga and the Yamuna. The Tons and the Rawar are also some of the rivers that flow through the district. Dodital, Nachiketatal, Kedartal, Ruinsara tal and Bharnala are some of the important lakes found in the district.

    The population of Uttarkashi district according to the 2011 census was 330,090 in which Uttarkashi town has population of 17,475 of which 9,601 are males and 7874 are females with a sex ratio of 820 female per 1000 male. The literacy rate is about 90.36 percent.

    Hindus form around 95 percent population of the people in Uttarkashi. Garhwali and Hindi and the major languages spoken by the people. Other languages spoken in the region are Kumaoni, Punjabi and English. People of all religion live together in peace and close harmony with each other.

    Govind Sanctuary

    Govind Wildlife Sanctuary  is famous its rich flora and fauna, Himalayan Snow leopard, Musk deer and fantastic views of Har ki Doon valley. Recommended.

    Tapovan

    Tapovan ( 4 kms trek from Gomukh )  the land of Lord Shiva is a barren cold desert above the Gangotri glaciers at height of 14640ft above sea - level. Recommended.

    Kedartal

    Kedartal ( 17 kms trek from Gangotri )  is a small lake surrounded by huge snow covered mountain peaks. This is a tough trek but worth it..............
