Bageshwar district is situated in the Uttarakhand State of India. Bageshwar city is the headquarters of the district. The district was carved out of Almora district and lies at the confluence of the Saryu and Gomti rivers.
Legends say that Lord Shiva visited here in the form of a Tiger ( Bagh ) and stayed here. The place Lord Shiva stayed was built into a temple in 1450 by Kumaon ruler, Laxmi Chand.
The temple is presently known as Baghnath Temple hence the town also got it name as the Land of the Tiger ( Bageshwar ).

Baijnath Temple( 26 kms ) This ancient temple is situated on the banks of the river Gomti. It is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.
Pandusthal( 28 kms ) This place is believed to be the battleground of Mahabharata which was fought between the Kauravas and the Pandavas. This place also offers a panoromic view of the beautiful surroundings.
Vijaypur ( 30 kms ) and Kanda ( 25 kms ) These charming hill resorts are blessed with exceptional natural beauty and provide a panoramic view of the snow capped Himalayan range from here.
Pindari Glacier and the Sunderdhunga Glacier ( 11,000 sq ft approx ) Both these glaciers offer ample trekking opportunities for the tourists. Trekking along with beautiful view of the himalayas peaks make this glaciers a trekking paradise.
Bageshwar Uttarakhand is a part of Kumaon tourism, and the local languages spoken are Kumaoni, Gadhwali and Hindi.
The best time to visit Bageshwar would be from Feb - April and Sept - October. Light woolens in summer and heavy woolens winter are advisable. The summer season extends from April to June. The winter season is from October to Febraury.
