      Tapovan the land of Lord Shiva is a cold barren desert above the Gangotri glaciers at an height of 14640 ft above sea - level.

      The Gangotri glaciers are in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand India and also one of the most biggest glaciers of the himalayan regions.

      Tapovan - in hinduism means forest of penance and as the name suggests it is actually a cold barren dry land suitable for offering penance.

      The beauty of Tapovan this lonely place is large stretches of rocky lands, peaceful environment, small network of streams surrounded by huge mountain peaks making it one of the most awesome sights in the garhwal region of Uttarakhand.

      Every year Tapovan is visited by thousands of tourists from all over the world for sight seeing, spiritual journey, adventure and trekking.

      Tapovan Trek

      The trek to Tapovan begins at from Gangotri. One has to trek - 14 kms to reach Bhojbasa. Then a 5kms medium level trek is required to reach Tapovan. It is a 4 day trek from Gangotri to Tapovan and back.

      Tapovan Trek is a part of Garhwal tourism and the local languages spoken are Gadhwali and Hindi.

      The best time to visit Tapovan would be from April - May. Cotton and woolens in summer and heavy woolens winter are advisable.
