Harsil is a small and beautiful hill town situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand , India at an altitude of 2745 mts above sea - level and is 72kms approx from Uttarkashi.
Harsil is named after Hari - Lord Shiva - Shil - Big Rock. Legends believe that Lord Shiva transformed himself into a big rock in order to absord the fury of goddess Bhagirathi and Jalandhari, so they could peacefully flow into the world.
The beautiful village is surrounded by snow capped mountains, dense deodar and coniferous forests and scenic environments.
