    Guptkashi

    Guptkashi is a small hilly town and an important yatra center in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand India. Guptkashi lies in the Garhwal Himalayas, 35kms on the way to Kedarnath.

    It is believed that Guptkashi is the place where Lord Shiva hid from the Pandavas.

    The beautiful pilgrim town is surrounded with coniferous and oak forests, beautiful landscapes and also offers a fantastic view of the snowy mountain peaks of Nanda Devi, Mana Parbat, Beethartoli, Neelkanth, Chowkhamba and Komet.

    According to legends after the battle of Mahabharata, the Pandavas repented the killings of their cousins the Kauravas and came here to ask forgivness from Lord Shiva.

    Lord Shiva hid here from the Pandavas for some time in order to elude them. Hence the place got the name Guptkashi.

    Chandra Shekara Mahadev Temple This holy temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple has a holy kund which is believed to be filled by the waters of the rivers Gangotri and Yamunotri.

    Breathtaking view of the snow capped Himalyas can also be seen from the temple.

    Ardha Narishwar Temple This holy temple dedicated to Lord Vishwanath. It also offers a beautiful view of the Garhwal snow peaked Himalayas.

    The trek to the Madmaheshwar starts from Guptkashi to Kalimath by road and the trek from Kalimath to Madhmaheshwar provide a panoramic view of Chaukhamba, Kedarnath and Neelkanth peaks.

    Gaurikund is well known for having hot sulphur water spring. Take a bath at the TaptKund.

    Guptkashi is also well known for Bird Watching. Many different species of birds are found here.

    Guptkashi Uttarakhand is a part of Garhwal tourism , and the local languages spoken are Hindi and Garhwali. The best time to visit Guptkashi would be from March - June and September - November.
