Neelkanth is located 32 kms from Rishikesh, in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. The region is well known for the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple.
Rishikesh is a holy city at the confluence of the rivers Chandrabhaga and Ganga. It is one of the most popular pilgrim centres and gateway to the Himalayan Shrines of Badrinath , Kedarnath , Gangotri and Yamunotri.
The Neelkanth Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located at the rivers Pankaja and Madhumati.It is surrounded by dense forests, Nar and Narayan mountains and is admist Vishnukoot, Brahmakoot and Manikoot valleys.
Legends say that Lord Shiva drank the poison that emerged during Samuda Manthan and helped the Gods in gaining rightful access to the nectar container, due to this Lord Shiva's throat became dark blue in color and hence the name Neel ( Blue ) - Kanth ( throat ) - Mahadev ( Lord Shiva ).
The Neelkanth temple is visited by thousands of tourists and devotees all round the year. The temple also offers a panoromic view of the nearby surroundings.
Neelkanth in Pauri Garhwal Uttarakhand is a part of Garhwal tourism, and the local languages spoken are Gadhwali and Hindi.
The best time to visit Neelkanth would be from October - June. Light woolens in summer and heavy woolens winter are advisable.
