Patal Bhubneshwar or Patal Bhuvneshwar is a limestone cave temple 14 km from Gangolihat in Pithoragarh Uttarakhand , India. It is located in the village Bhubneshwar. It is said that this underground cave enshrines Lord Shiva and thirty three crore Gods. The cave is 160 m long and 90 feet deep from the point of entrance.
It is a series of caves within caves built by the flow of water.The cave has a narrow tunnel-like opening which leads to a number of caves. Many small and big limestone rock formations have been created which resemble the thirty three crore hindu Gods.
This cave is been mentioned in Skanda Purana. king Rituparna of Surya Dynasty entered the cave during the Tretayuga with Sheshnaag as his guide and killed down thousands of demons living in the caves.
There are four entrances inside the cave named as Randwar, Paapdwar, Dharamdwar and Mokshadwar. The Paapdwar was closed soon after the death of Ravana. The cave was rediscovered by the Pandavas in Duaparyuga and the Randwar, or the road to war, was closed down after the great Mahabharata epic war. At present only two gateways are opened.
Berinag Temple is a small hilly town. A beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Bedinag (Nag Devta) is located here. It is also famous for its tea gardens. The temple also offers a panaromic view of the Himalayas.
Dhawaj Temple This well known temple is situated, at an elevation of 2100 mts. above the sea level, at a distance of 15 Kms. including a journey of 4.5 Kms. on foot. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Maa Jayanti. The trekking to this temple is a bit difficult but the fantastic view of the snow - covered Himalayas is worth visiting this place.
Narayan Ashram in Pithoragarh is a spiritual place engaged in socio-economic activities to help and promote local people and imparting education to local childrens.
