The Rajaji Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the well known National Parks in Uttarakhand. The park is famous for its natural scenic beauty. Rajaji Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 820.42 sq kms.
In 1983, three parks - Rajaji National Park, Motichur and Chilla were combined into one large protected forest reserve and renamed as Rajaji Wildlife Sanctuary.
The park got its name after the famous freedom fighter, Late Sri C. Rajgopalchari.
The sanctuary has lush evergreen forests, riverine vegetation and terrain grasslands which increases its beauty manifold. The Wildlife Sanctuary is visited by tourists from all over the country.
A large number of wide animals are found here. They include Asian Elephant, Tiger, Goral, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Leopard-cat, Common Palm Civet, Sloth Bear, Jackal (above), Small Indian Mongoose, Common Mongoose, Barking Deer, Satmbar, Spotted Deer (Chital), Wild Boar etc. There are about 450 wild elephants in the sanctuary.
More than 300 types of birds including hunting birds are found mainly near the banks of rivers.
Park remains open from 15th November to 15th June for 7 months only. It remains closed during rainy season for five months due to flooding of streams there by making it inaccessible and also for maintenance.
Rajaji Wildlife Sanctuary in Haridwar Uttarakhand is a part of Garhwal tourism, and the local languages spoken are Hindi and Gadhwali.
The best time to visit Rajaji Wildlife Sanctuary would be from November - June.
