Dunagiri is a beautiful hill town situated at an alititude of 1780 mts above sea level in the Almora district of Uttarakhand India.
Legends believe that when Lord Hanuman was carrying the Sanjiwani Buti a small piece fell here and since that day the place came to be known as Dunagiri.
It is well known for the revered the temple dedicated to Dunagiri devi or goddess Vaishnavi Devi. The temple offers a panaromic view of the Gogas Valley
Places to visit in Dunagiri
Dunagiri Temple or Mata Vaishnavi Devi Temple ( 15 kms ) 1.5 kms steep trek is required to reach the temple dedicated to Mata Vaishnavi Devi.
The temple attracts a lot of pilgrims from all over the country every year. The temple also provides a beautiful view of the majestic Himalayas in their towering glory.
The Temple is one of the two Vaishnavi Shaktipeeths in India other is Vaisno Devi temple in Jammu Kashmir.
Pandukholi ( 10 kms ) from Mangalikhan. ( 5kms motorable + 5kms trek ) is a beautiful hill resort surrounded by dense forests. Legends believe that the Pandavas lived here during their 14 yrs of banishment period.
Pandukholi too provides a beautiful view of the Himalayan mountains and the nearby surroundings.
Bhatkot A few kilometers from Dunagiri is the peak of Bhatkot. The peak is situated at 9086 ft, it is the highest peak in the Kumaon region.
Sukhdev Muni Ashram ( 2 kms ) is a quite and peaceful picnic spot.

The best time to visit Dunagiri Temple would be from March - June and September - October. Light woolens in summer and heavy woolens winter are advisable. The summer season extends from April to June. The winter season is from September to Febraury.
