Valley of Flowers National Park is an Indian national park in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand India. It is famous for its meadows of alpine flowers and natural beauty.
This valley of flowers is spread over an area of 85 sq km and is situated at a height of 11,000 feet to 14,000 feet in the Western Himalayas.
The place was discovered in 1931 when Frank Smythe a British mountaineer lost his way while returning from an expedition to Mt.Kamet. This mysterious valley was hidden from the outside world, by the locals who still believe that this is a magical valley of the Fairies.
The Valley and is surrounded on either side by beautiful snow capped peaks. The beauty of the valley is enhanced by the Pashupati river flowing in the region. A large portion of this valley is on its right bank and is every nature lover’s dream come true.
In the year 1982 an area of 8,950 hectares of the valley was declared a National Park and later in July 2005 the Valley of flowers was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The Valley of flower has over 300 different species of wild flowers like the Himalayan blue poppy, daisies, dainthus, calendula and white and blue anemones. The color of the valley changes almost everyday taking its color from hundreds of new different flowers that bloom everyday.
The Valley of flower is also home to many wild animals such as the snow leopard, Himalayan black and brown bears. Different varieties of deer such as barking deer and the musk deer can also be seen here in the sanctuary.
It is also rich in avifauna and many birds such as the Himalayan Golden Eagle, Himalayan Snowcock, Himalayan Monal, Snow Pigeon, Sparrow Hawk can be seen here.
It is one of the most beautiful high altitude valleys in the world. The snow melts from May and the entire valley then blooms with different types and color of flowers.
The month of July and August during the monsoon is the right time to trek and the sight of the blooming flowers make it truly a heaven on earth.
Valley of flowers in Uttarakhand is a part of Garhwal tourism, and the local languages spoken are Gadhwali and Hindi. The best time to visit Valley of flowers would be from July and August.
