Kalpeshwar is at an elevation of 2134 mts above sea - level in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand India. It is one of the most important of the Panch Kedars.
It is also the easiest to access of the Panch Kedars. Kalpeshwar is visited by thousands of tourist and pilgrims from all over the world.
The Panch Kedar temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva. The hump is worshipped at Kedarnath, the arms at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the navel at Madmaheshwar and the head at Kalpeshwar.
The Kalpeshwar temple is a beautiful rock temple. Inside the temple is an embedded dark rock representing the Swayambhu shivaling of the head of Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva had explained the greatness of Kalpeshwar to goddess Parvati in the 'Skanda Puran'.
It is said that upon cursed by rishi Durvasa, Lord Indra came here and meditated to Lord Shiva and regained back his throne.
It is thus believed that those who perform puja here are relieved of all their sins.
Kalpeshwar is situated admist delightful natural surrounding , lush green forest and it also offers a fantastic 360° view of the Nanda Devi, Panchachullis, Bandarpooch, Kedarnath, Neelkant and the Chaukhamba peaks of the garhwal himalayas.
Kalpeshwar Uttarakhand is a part of Kumaon tourism, and the local languages spoken are Kumaoni, Gadhwali and Hindi.
Heavy snowfall during winters and landslides during rainy season can disrupt your visit to this shrines so the best time to visit Kalpeshwar would be from April - June and September - October.
